Scope of Works
Construction of 26.1m high rock fill dam with central impervious clay core, Construction of ungated-frontal-ogee weir with 99m long stepped spillway using reinforced concrete and gabion materials, Construction of 110m long x 1.6m high x 1.0m wide reinforced concrete and intake tower of multi level inlets type with 250mm diameter transmission pipe, Drilling and carrying out curtain grouting along the dam axis, Construction of 4km gravel access road, Construction of small power house at the downstream dam toe and installation of 15kW mini hydropower at water supply main transmission pipe
Impacts
The dam is currently full of water. However, its impacts are expected to be realised when the ongoing Maralal Water Supply Project Phase I and the proposed Maralal Water Supply Phase Phase II projects are complete which involve construction of a treatment plant, storage tanks & distribution networks
Key Challenges
The primary source of funds for this project was the equalization fund which was subsequently suspended. The MOWSI the took up funding the project through the annual budget allocation. However, delays in this disbursement led to slow progress of the works.
