Target Areas
The target area is the Nairobi Aquifer Suite. Extensively covering the whole of Nairobi County and its constituencies as well as some parts of the Kajiado, Kiambu and Machakos County that fall within the Nairobi Metropolitan area.
Scope of Works
• Undertake a comprehensive groundwater mapping of the Nairobi Metropolitan area. • Undertake groundwater recharge in Nairobi Aquifer Suite covering approximately 3000square kilometers • Develop 3 MAR sites within the suite by drilling 3 injection well inject water • Develop 3 wells to monitor groundwater in the said areas. • Develop 3 above ground storage capacities.
Impacts
• Raise the groundwater level by 5% over a period of 10 years • 10% increases borehole siting success rate. • The drilling depths to be reduced by 20% reducing the cost of Drilling • 100% reduction in displacement and land subsidence as a result of aquifer depletion. • 50% reduction of waste water and surface runoff and hence flooding reduction • Improve water quality by 5% through reduced concentration of the contaminant • 100% mapping of NAS in reference to Radon 222 mapping • Job creation under the operation and maintenace
Key Challenges
Several illegal Boreholes making it hard to monitor the groundwater trends in the area post groundwater recharge Source of water for recharge. The surface water is highly contaminated hence may require post treatment to purify the water before injecting.
Remarks
The project is currently under assessment to identify key sites of undertaking the groundwater recharge.
